Founder and Principal Engineer of Engineered Septic Solutions. Licensed Professional Engineer in Hawaii, Oregon, and California with over 12 years of wastewater engineering experience.
Matthew came to the Big Island because of love: love for his partner, whose roots run deep in South Kona, and love for the kind of life that only this place makes possible. They put down roots in Holualoa to be near family and friends, and to build something here that matters: a home connected to the ʻāina, to the community, and to the people who make this island what it is.
Living on an island teaches you things quickly. The water you drink comes from the ground beneath your feet. The reefs we swim are fed by the same aquifer your neighbor's cesspool drains into. There is no "away" here. What we put into the land comes back to us. Matthew started Engineered Septic Solutions because he wanted to do his part: to provide his family, friends, and community with clean, safe water by helping Kona property owners take care of the land and water that sustains all of us, one property at a time, for many generations to come. That kuleana, that sense of responsibility, is what drives every project he takes on.
Fortunately for the community he wants to serve, Matthew's career has been building toward exactly this work. With over 15 years in civil engineering and more than 12 years focused specifically on wastewater systems, including collection system design, treatment infrastructure, and individual wastewater system engineering across multiple states, and he brings a depth of technical expertise that is rare in a solo practice. He also serves as a Civil Engineer V in the Wastewater Division of the County of Hawaiʻi's Department of Environmental Management, which keeps him current on the regulatory and infrastructure landscape that every ESS project is built within.
"When you have a question, you speak directly with Matthew, not a project manager or admin assistant. The engineer who designed your system is the same person who answers your calls, responds to your emails, and appears on-site during inspections."
What We Stand For
Engineering is a service profession. These principles guide every project Matthew undertakes on behalf of his clients and the community.
Hawaiʻi's aquifers and nearshore reefs are irreplaceable. Every IWS Matthew designs is engineered not just to meet the minimum regulatory standard, but to actually protect the island's water resources for future generations.
When you engage ESS, you have Matthew's direct contact information and his personal commitment to respond. There are no project managers or phone trees. Engineers are accountable for their work in a way that larger organizations simply cannot replicate.
The DOH permitting process is complex, but it should not be opaque. Matthew explains every step, every requirement, and every decision in plain language so you understand what is happening with your project and why.

Submit a project inquiry and Matthew will follow up within 3–5 business days, personally, with a clear response and a recommended next step. There are no automated systems or receptionist queues; you will speak directly with the engineer who is responsible for your project.
